Accent to rally

DRIVEN a WRC rally car on the road lately? Try the Hyundai Accent, available from Kah Bintang Auto Sdn Bhd, the dealers for the Hyundai Accent 1.5.

A word of caution is in order, though. Whilst the body shell is the same one that the WRC rally car uses, that's about as far as it goes.

The WRC car is stripped bare of most of the trim, is fitted with a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine with an output of 300 horses, full-time 4WD, a sequential 6 or 7-speed Xtrac gearbox, massive, heavy duty rally suspension, humongous brakes, a full welded in rollcage and a custom-made engine management system.

With all these goodies, the Hyundai Accent WRC car is capable of a 0-100kph in under five seconds.

The Hyundai Accent you can get here is a road car, with a SOHC (Single Overhead Camshaft), 12-valve, naturally aspirated fuel injected engine with an output of 91 ps at 5500 rpm. The gearbox is a four-speed automatic, and accelerates from zero to 100kph in about 14 seconds.

Having said that, there is, of course, the fact that the body was probably chosen as the "host" for the WRC car because of its "right" size, good set-up, and balance.

Another fact to bring everything back into perspective is that the WRC would cost in the region of RM2 million to build up, compared to the RM63,146.50 that you need to pay to get one of the road going versions available here.

What else you get for your money is four-wheel independent suspension (a plus point when you compare this to other cars in this 1.5 litre segment), front ventilated disc brakes (sorry, no ABS), and rear drums. Suspension is Macpherson struts in front, and a mult-link rear strut arrangement.

Anti-roll bars are standard for front and rear (another plus point).

The suspension is tuned for comfortable driving, and I would volunteer to say that it is extremely well suited for the family man using the Accent as a daily drive.

More exuberant types might want to look at a set of stiffer shocks and some fine-tuning of the suspension to improve stability around tight corners at high speeds.

Alloy wheels are optional extras, and the standard tyre size is 185/60 R14. Power steering is standard.


Compact car

The Hyundai Accent is about the same size as its competitors in the 1.5 litre class size, with a wheelbase of 2440mm, an overall length of 4260mm, and an overall height of 1,395mm.

It is a compact car, but its clean lines and relatively low waistline makes it look bigger from some angles. Inside, the seats are large and comfortable.

The standard seats are listed in the brochure as fabric, but the ones in our test car looked like they were covered in some kind of "leather/vinyl" material.

We found them comfortable, and legroom was adequate for both front and rear passengers. The driver's seat can be adjusted for height and thigh support.

Also appreciated are the dual drink holders at the front, and the split/folding seats at the rear. Boot space is excellent for this size and capacity of car.

It was easy to get the ideal driving position with the seat adjusters and the tilt steering. Petite ladies would probably like the Hyundai Accent for the simple reason that the dashboard is low, and the view over the bonnet is excellent.



Straight-line stability


On the road, the Accent is best at up to the legal speed limit of 110kph, after which noise/vibration and harshness starts to creep in.

Straight-line stability is good, and lane change is as expected of a car with comfort settings for suspension. Fuel economy is reasonable; we managed 450km on a full tank of petrol, which works out to be 9.45 litres per 100km.

Pushed to the limit, top speed was licking 180kph, but the stable cruising speed is between 120 and 140kph. The gears are made tall for fuel economy, and at 140kph, the rev counter is at 3,000 rpm.

Overall, the Hyundai Accent is a decent entry level car, ideal for the driver with no ambitions of being the next Malaysian rally champion (unless he buys the rally version).

It is economical to run, and is spacious and comfortable for a small family. Vertically challenged people will like it for the low dashboard and excellent visibility it offers.

  便宜又物有所值的,是现代Accent。Accent的价格实在是低得令人惊喜,1.3公升的最新的售价是5万5555元,但是我们建议最好多付一些,买1.5公升的,1.5公升的Accent马力刚刚好,行驶起来更顺畅。反正价格已经是很不错了,何不买好一点点的呢?

  最新出炉的车价当中,1.5的Sunny售价只是6万9000元,简直是不可思议,日产的新车宽大耐看,很合新加坡的口味,这种价格买这样的车,在几年前是无法想象的。

  不过,6万9000元的Sunny是手动型的,现在流行自动排挡,所以我们在7万元以下的车子中,我们还是推荐1.5公升自动排挡的Accent。

被選為澳洲二零零一年度最佳小轎車的現代 Accent,從一九九九年面市至二零零三年為止,已在全球取得接近一百萬輛的銷售量,在北美洲的美國和加拿大,便佔了總銷量的一半以上,是韓國現代汽車公司在全世界最暢銷的款型。

Accent吸引人之處,是這輛車為韓國現代汽車藉以進軍世界汽車越野錦標賽(WRC)及在強手如林的第2方程式組別中,取得優越成績的車種;世界賽車聯盟(FIA)規定,舉凡參與 WRC的車種,必須源自在市面上行銷的汽車,而且其產量不得少過兩萬五千輛!

現代將本身在 WRC中吸取的寶貴經驗,轉移至 Accent轎車身上,是順理成章之事。廠方說,Accent轎車無論是引擎、傳動系統及行駛底盤,其可靠性能皆經過越野賽車的千錘百煉。

作為一輛世界車,Accent備有四門式、五門掀背式及三門式的車身搭配1.3、1.5及1.6汽油引擎和1.5柴油引擎各種款型供選擇。在大馬裝配的為四門式1.5款型,可選擇自排或手排。

安全世界公認

車型迎合潮流

引擎构造輕盈

作為動力核心的一台1.5升引擎,採用4缸橫列式12閥式單凸輪軸多點燃料注射工藝,最高輸出功率在5500轉分發揮91匹馬力,而其強扭力的分佈範圍,在介于1500至5500轉分之間可取得約九成的扭力,130牛頓米的扭力峰值則在低達3000轉分即可達至。這台引擎的一大特色是構造輕盈,而且燃料經濟高超,自排款型在市區行駛每加侖可取得44公里,在高速公路以恆速行駛則可達到56公里;手排的表現數字分別為47及58公里。

底盤及行駛裝置智慧功能

前輪麥弗臣支柱及后輪多連桿配防滾桿的懸掛系統,經過世界汽車越野錦標賽的測試與驗證,並由現代工程師加以調校以求在塑創至佳道路操控表現方面達到完美;尤有進者,減振器為氣壓式,這比一般的油壓式系統更舒適,且有助于提升駕控性能。

Accent的四速自動變速箱具快思邏輯或智慧功能,可根據行駛、路面狀況及甚至天氣和地形高度來自動控制換檔,比如在駛上斜坡時,檔位可避免不必要的換去較高的檔位,以確保取得至佳的攀行扭力;下斜坡時,也可透過切斷 OD超速傳動檔位來防止處于較高的檔位。此系統也具備跳檔功能,可以避免一個檔位以直接跳到另一檔,藉以節省換檔的時間。

車廂新穎舒適

車廂裝備與佈置,塑創了大車的舒適與一應俱全感。新穎的裝備包括更易控制的滾動式冷氣風孔氣流調節格;自排款型的儀錶附設液晶顯示屏幕,以展示各種行駛資訊如車外氣溫、平均燃料消耗量、仍可行駛里數等。電動式的車邊望后鏡加熱以防止結霧(只自排款型),這是高級車才有的裝備,也是 Accent的增值裝備之一。

兩款 Accent皆採用同級車相形見絀的液晶多功能顯示屏幕,讓司機可輕易閱讀行駛資訊如里程、所剩燃料、平均耗油量及外面溫度等。錶板採用木片嵌飾,排檔桿頭及駕駛盤皆包以真皮。半皮質座椅為標準裝備之一。后座椅可作60/40分摺,因此行李廂要裝載長形物件一般上不成問題。座椅上的頭枕也可以調校高度,以取得至佳的乘坐舒適感。此外,車內有許多用以置放雜物及飲料的空間。

嘉星強大售后服務網絡

嘉星(Kah Bintang)的前身其實就是以本田起家的嘉摩哆(Kah Motor),也保留了后者的大部份幹部班底及強大的售后服務網絡,包括維修與零件中心。

引擎隨心發力

四缸列式的一點五升引擎,最高輸出功率為91ps。它的一個優點是在較低的引擎轉速即可達至扭力峰值,意味著在行駛時的扭力幾乎是隨傳隨至,讓司機能夠隨心所欲的發力加速。

廠方數字顯示,Accent 在市區行駛的平均耗油量約每加侖可行駛四十四公里,在高速公路以恆速行駛則可取得五十七公里,可以說具備了高超的燃料經濟。

Accent 備有四門式、三門式及五門式三種車身搭配一點三、點五及點六的汽油或柴油引擎,不過在本地由東方現代(Oriental-Hyundai)裝配及由嘉星汽車(Kah Bintang Auto)行銷的 Accent,只備有1.5L手排及1.5L自排兩個款型供選擇,兩者的車價相差大約三千令吉而已。

裝備智慧系統

自排款型採用的傳動系統屬于現代開發的最新 alpha 系智慧型系統,具備超速傳動檔位和防跳檔功能;五前速手排系統的變檔功能及液壓式輔助器,在改良后使進檔不費吹灰之力。

兩款 Accent 皆採用同級車相形見絀的液晶多功能顯示屏幕,讓司機可輕易閱讀行駛資訊如里程、所剩燃料、平均耗油量及外面溫度等。

試駕印象平衡紮實

本文試駕的1.5L自排款型,是一輛體積甚至比豐田 VIOS 1.5還小的四門式轎車,整輛車的體積可以嬌小玲瓏來形容之,外形設計平實,線條簡單利落而花巧不多。從車頭大燈延伸至車尾的浮凸腰線,是車形的一個特色,如從司機座位望前,引擎罩前端兩邊的浮凸感尤為強烈。要進一步凸顯外形上的跑風,車主可以九百九十令吉的優惠價裝上一套十四吋的合金輪輞。

半皮式座椅及門內側裝飾要多付八百九十令吉,但整體上予人整齊細膩的感覺。司機座椅除了可前挪后移外,也可調整椅背及高度,確保各種體型的司機都能取得舒適貼切的坐姿。

車廂空間不是很大,前座坐上兩個大人已有並肩的感覺;后排座椅坐墊不大,椅背傾斜度不大,坐上三個大人會感到頭部及腳部的空間並不充裕。不過,司機座的腳部空間寬敞,還設了一個用以支撐左腳的腳墊。

引擎運轉聲輕快,打進D檔猛踏油門,感覺上動力的傳遞似有遲滯的現象,但大約過了三千轉速,動力源源而至,車速隨著指針衝向接近紅線區範圍而迅速遞增。以一點五的引擎來說,整體上的動力已不能苛求,而引擎聲浪大也是免不了的。

排檔桿上附設超速檔位切斷鈕鍵,這是一個很好用及有助于增進行駛安全的裝備。懸掛系統的調校較為偏硬,藉以顯現出這輛車的硬朗作風;在較為不平的路面疾駛,后座乘客會感到稍為刺耳的聲浪傳進車廂。直線疾馳至140km/h以上的表現,並未予人浮躁感,即使感覺上這是一輛車身較輕的轎車!彎路飆車的表現,取向準確,彎角緊急減速平穩而有大將之風,顯然應歸功予平衡得體及紮實的懸掛結構,特別是以氣壓式減振器取代油壓式減振器,表現更勝一籌!

Anyway, the website is for car owners to feedback about their cars. So far 3 accent owners gave positive feedback and 2 accent owners gave negative feedback. All feedbacks are from North America. Bear in mind the engine size and warranty sold in north america is very different from Malaysia.

Below are the feedback that i cut and paste from that website.

Good feedback #1:
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing so far... Knock on wood!
General comments?
I was looking for a new commuter car to take the place of my protege. Price, gas mileage, and fun facter where all considerations in my descision. The feather lite cluch and the easy shifting one me over quickly. The suprising pickup from the little 1.6 DOHC engine was just iceing on the cake!

accelleration is quick and the 4 wheel suspension really soaks up the bumps in the road. Very suprising for a package of 7500 after manufactur's rebates!

Best warranty in America at 100k 10 years! I would say take a peek at this one if you are considering a small nimble little car that won't break the bank.

General comments?
I've only had the car for about a week, but I love it.

It is definitely scaled for smaller people (I'm 5'4) and would probably be uncomfortable if you're taller. It's an appealing, thoughtfully constructed car.

Excellent gas mileage, great features, and a fantastic warranty. I wonder why I don't see more people driving them?!

It's my first new car, and I'm thrilled with it.

The only fault I have had with my new Accent is a loose passenger side rear-view mirror.
General comments?
We were looking for an economical, reliable second car. The Accent has been a pleasant surprise and proves that just because you want something small and economical, doesn't mean you have to settle for a boring econobox.

The Accent has many thoughtful features, including heated external mirrors and driver's seat adjustment controls that make it almost impossible for anyone to be uncomfortable. The car is small, of course, but the trunk space is impressive and front passenger room is adequate for most. Rear seating is tight but we didn't buy this car with the intention of hauling four people on any long trips.

Mechanically, the little engine loves to rev and propels the car competently. It's not a hot-rod, but that's not what we were looking for. The 5 speed manual transmission is smooth and easy to use. Fuel consumption has lived up to specifications already, despite being told that estimated fuel consumption is not fully achieved until after the first 2000 kilometers.

For the car it is meant to be, the Accent is a recommended buy. It's perfect as a second car, for students, or anyone who is looking for relatively basic, economical transportation. The days of ugly, unreliable econoboxes are over and the Accent is a true testament to that. Granted, we've only had the car for a short time, we are very satisfied and past reliability ratings make us feel confident that we made the right choice.


Bad feedback #1:
Accent GT:
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Car pulls to the left from day one (66 miles on the car). drove another identical new accent (45 miles on the car) and it does the same. they say it is the torte streering and with it being a small car it pulls to the left. it is a driving hazzard and hard to handle on the road.
General comments?
HYUNDAI should recall these cars. this usually does not happen until there has been a couple accidents first.

Bad feedback #2:
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The car sways (pulls) to the left from day one. Went back and drove another new one just lke it. It does the same. The pull progressed as time went on. They say there is nothing they can do to fix it. That they all do that and it is just the characteristic of the car. It is the torque steering and it is the result of it being a small car. This is going to cause the tires to wear much faster. It is hard to control at times and could be a hazard.
General comments?
I wished I did not buy it and shopped around a little longer. Although the exterior does look nice.

ANCAP crash test results
Hyundai Accent | 2000 -
Overall evaluation:
The HYUNDAI ACCENT performed reasonably well in the offset crash test (score 10.76 out of 16). The passenger compartment held its shape well except for dash, firewall and pedal movement. Head and chest protection were good for the driver and airbag contact was stable. The passenger did not have an airbag but head protection was good. Protection from serious leg injury was marginal for the driver.

The vehicle performed slightly better in the side impact crash (score 10.96 out of 16). Chest protection was marginal.

Safety features
A driver's airbag is standard equipment. A passenger airbag as optional as part of a safety package.

The front seat belts have pretensioners to reduce slack in the event of a crash. The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.

Restraints: Good
Offset crash test
The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and protection was good. The head started to roll off the side of the airbag but recovered. The driver's knee hit the steering column adjuster, which applied a localised load to the knee. The passenger's head did not hit anything and protection was good. Chest protection was adequate. The passenger's knees hit the glove box and dash. There was a stiff bracket near where the right knee hit the dash.

Side impact crash test (no front passenger)
The top of the driver's head glanced the top of the door frame then swung down and almost hit the edge of door panel. Rebound was well controlled.

Structure: Acceptable
Offset crash test
The passenger compartment held its shape well except for dash and firewall movement. The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards 10cm and was severely folded. The brake pedal moved rearwards by 15cm. The accelerator pedal had swung across in front of the brake pedal and was pushed against the driver's left leg causing a severe gash in the dummy's "skin". The dash moved 14cm towards the driver. The roof held its shape and the width of the driver's doorway shortened by 5cm. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash high manual effort was required to open the driver's door.

Side impact crash test
The centre pillar and the side doors were pushed inwards moderately. The driver's seat was pushed sideways but the anchorages held.
