ECU tuning to make it better in terms of fuel consumption and also better response and small torque and hp gain.

ECU tuning will cost a lot. ROI will be long. It will be months if not years to get break even. Let say ECU tuning costs you RM1000, and let say because of this tuning, you save RM30 per month for your fuel. You'll take RM1000/RM30 per month = 33 months before you can break even.

The drivability factor after ECU tuning, that's something you can't put a value on. If you calculate just based on pure dollar value, then the ROI could be years.

ECU is the Engine Control Unit. This computer is the thing inside the system that will decide how much fuel to be injected into the chamber based on torque required, how much pressure you put on your accelerator, temperture etc. This split second decision is made based on preset value, sort of a data table, given by hyundai engineer. When you remap, this table is the one that you remap. There are a lot more data set inside the ECU but you dont touch it during ECU remap.

ROI is Return of Investment. Let say you invest RM1000 to save petrol, when will you get back your RM1000 before you can really save money on petrol? That's the gist of ROI.

I think it worth doing the ECU tuning as the fuel price now is RM2.70. Should get your money back pretty quick if it does save some petrol. Dont buy the magnetic "fuel saving" junks, it doesnt work.

After the recent fuel hike, dollar is the first thing to put in mind. Not driving pleasure. (what pleasure you have anyway in driving this car? this is no skyline).

Here cums DannyK, partly-qualified accountant to dispel all doubts on 'ROI'. Twisted Evil

Actually you've all got it wrong. Laughing

Allow me to use a simple example to explain. Cool

Company 'Renault' bought an advanced computer, the 'R27', to reduce diesel consumption of its production.
Cost of R27 is $1,000
It can be used for 10 years, after which it will be sold as scrap for $20.
Diesel consumption:
Before using R27 = $100/year
After using R27 = $80/year
As such, the benefit of using R27 is saving in diesel cost of $20/year.

ROI (Return on Investment):
It is a RELATIVE MEASURE, i.e. calculated in '%'. I'm using one of the many variation/version of this ratio.

Return / Average value of investment
= $20 / [($1,000+$20)/2]
= $20 / $510
= 3.92% p.a.

Whether or not the R27 is worth it will depend on what is the minimum ROI Renault have set for its investments.

Payback (period):
It is an ABSOLUTE measure, a measure of how long (years) it takes for a project, investment, etc to 'repay' itself.

Initial investment / Average return (per year)
= $1,000 / $20
= 50 years

As such, it is not worth it, as R27 can only be used for 10 years, but the Payback is 50 years.

Hope that this little 'lecture' is helpful. Very Happy

a lot of difference....

30 cent/km for Accent 1.5l (A) GLS, and 20 cent/km for Honda City VTEC (proven on same driver, same driving habit and same route). That's over 33% savings!

~90ps for Accent and ~110ps for City VTEC. My accent was even smoked by a MyVi (EZi).... lose at traffic light and after that still cannot catch up!

purchase price is however cheaper, less payment every month. that should be the main thing. no need all those fuel savings things. they just doesnt work. you already save on monthly payment.
